Istachatta General Store

Just past Pineola is Istachatta. The name has been variously interpreted as Creek Indian for “red man” and “man’s river crossing.” There was a ferry crossing here on the Withlacoochee River in the 1800s that was replaced by an iron bridge in 1910 (which is no longer there). Istachatta has a community park, a library, a tiny post office, and the Istachatta General Store. This is a real general store, not one done up for tourists. The shelves are filled with staples—canned goods, flour, butter, milk, and eggs. A handwritten sign on the wall reads, “Boiled Peanuts $1.99 a Qt.” Sometimes they have live music on Friday nights. The store also has three tables, and serves breakfast and lunch. I’m kind of partial to the cheeseburger.

Continuing south, then east, on Lake Lindsey Road (CR 476) for about a mile and a half brings you to Nobleton, at the crossing of the Withlacoochee River. The Nobleton Boat Rental Outpost, on the north side of the highway, rents canoes, kayaks, and pontoon boats, and also offers airboat rides.

These four communities still retain much of their old-Florida flavor, and I hope that never changes.
